April 24th, 2008Welcome to Easy Raised Bed Gardening, the place where you can get tips, hints and advice on growing your own vegetables, herbs and flowers in raised beds.
So what is raised bed gardening anyway? Well it is basically, growing plants in beds built above normal ground level. the beds are usually made from a wooden frame, although other materials work well too. They’re typically rectangular. the soil is tilled and mixed with the soil in the bed or it can be new nutrient rich soil placed on top of the ground soil.
The benefits of growing plants this way are many. the biggest is raising more produce in a small area. Garden space can be doubled and sometimes tripled when plants are grown in a raised bed, mainly because the square footage for paths are reduced.
Soil conditions are easily improved in a raised bed. This allows you to grow plants in ares where the soil is very unfriendly to plants. For example you have clay based soil or very sandy soil, growing a variety of plants can be difficult. But with a raised bed you can amend the soil with purchased topsoil or mixed soil.
With raised beds, weeds are typically less of a problem. Don’t get me wrong, you will have some weeds, but they will be easier to see and eliminate.
Building the bed frames with a bottom attached allows them to be set on tables. This way elderly and handicapped people can reach the plants easily to care for them. This lets them continue to enjoy gardening without the problems of a typical garden.
Raised bed gardening is a great way to enjoy growing your own vegetables, flowers and herbs.
